I learned of the site via contact with Mark, after I'd posted an entry at another discussion network.
Am looking forward to sharing some interesting discussions, and advancing the knowledge of that early football history. More particularly, when it is based on original research. There are so many sources out there which are under-utilised.
The images of footballers from the 1890s is interesting. They are like "footy card" images with their "action shots". Tom banks is in my team of the century. I wonderful half back player. W. warren was Williamstown's leading goal kicker in the 1890s and was also arguably their best player in this decade. He also had some brothers who played with the club. Strickland is another 19th Century team of the century member. A great player for Carlton and Collingwood. He also established Collingwood's winning culture. North Melbourne's T.C. Wilson is less known. he only captained for one year (1895) before leaving to play in Western Australia. Many of Victoria's best ('professional') players went to WA for the money at this time as there was an economic Depression in Victoria at the time.

I am still working through the material I gathered at the SLSA. I have pretty much collected match results and participating players from the period 1877-1887, as well as old player recollections from 20th C copies of the Adelaide Advertiser, South Australian Register, Express & Telegraph & others. I have also started accumulating team photos of Norwood, South Adelaide, Port Adelaide & other clubs from the 19th Century. I would like to reproduce them on this site but don't know about the permissions situation.
Cheers
